I Love Football Season!

You know why I love football so much….because each game matters. Either it’s a region game that applies to the playoffs or in the case of this week in region 8 (which will cross with Ft. Payne, Etowah, Arab, and Boaz for playoffs), it will be this last “out of region” game that will determine overall record and where they will be seeded. I love the fact that at the beginning of the season, nobody had DAR in the playoffs…but look out the Patriots are there for the first time in school history. I love when so many region championships and playoff seeding come down to the last region game…and the excitement the fans show when the game is on the line. I love how the coaches begin to look at the playoffs as the second season…with a “win and you go on….lose you go home” mindset. The only thing I don’t love..is when we get to this point it means the season is nearly over.

Week 4: Big John

First off….congrats to the Boaz Pirates as they remain undefeated with a huge win over Albertville and one step (and a region win) from being Marshall County Football Champions! But even as I look at that, I have to say there is a lot of football left to be played…a lot of playoff and region championships left to be decided. Now, I believe that Albertville will get a region win or 2 in the second half of the season and possibly end the season with a win over Guntersville. Boaz must now run a tough gauntlet of teams in region 7 to stay undefeated (Fort Payne, Southside, Arab, and then end with Etowah).  Sardis seems to be headed for a week 9 showdown with Oneonta and possibly a region title on the line. Let’s not forget that Fyffe, Ider, Sand Rock, Sylvania, Geraldine, Plainview and New Hope are all in the fights of their regions playoff picture. Ladies and Gentlemen, the playoffs are not in a few weeks…I believe they actually sort of start this week…as ESPN says…each game matters.

Week 5: Plainview

Plainview escaped “The Rock” in a non region game friday night winning 14-7.

It was a defensive struggle throughout most of the game but in the end Plainview made one more play. The only points in the first half happened with 24 seconds left in the half when Cole Porter broke a 29 yard touchdown run making it 7-0 at half. The third quarter was scoreless with both defenses making big plays. The biggest play was towards the end of the quarter when Isaiah Glover picked off a Sand Rock pass in the red zone.

Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to get a first down an had to punt with seconds left on the clock. Like they did most of the game Sand Rock’s special teams had a big return to set up a wild forth quarter. After a Sand Rock touchdown the Bears drove down the field to tie the game at 7 all. Caleob Spears scored on a 9 yard run with 5:43 left in the game. Sand Rock drove down the field with minutes left in the game they were already in the red zone. 4th an 20 The Rock went for it an again the Bears Defense stood its ground getting the ball to end the game. Jayse Pruitt completed 5-15  for 122 yards. The leading rusher Chase Willingham racked up 70 yards on 12 carries.

Next week Plainview host Brindlee Mountain for Homecoming an a key region game.

Week 4 and Hmmm....

I say hmmm…because now the season begins to get a little interesting. Albertville (0-4) vs. Boaz (4-0)…hmmm…

Albertville has played some of the best competition in the state, while Boaz has played 4 opponents with a combined 1-15 record…look for a great game in Boaz this week. Class 5A region 7…hmmm…Boaz and Ft. Payne lead the pack, but look for Arab, Etowah, and Southside to try to upset the “apple-cart” in the second half of the region season and reshuffle the playoff positions. Class 4A region 6…hmmm…

I can’t wait to see how all of this shakes out, with Sardis, Oneonta, and St. Clair County all 3-0 in the region and still having to play one another during the month of October. Right now, Alabama is #1 without question…hmmm…can they run an October gauntlet with games at Missouri, Tennessee, LSU, and then at home versus Mississippi State and Texas A&M? Auburn…hmmm…not the season fans were hoping for, but can the team that showed up to play LSU show up for the rest of the season?

Week 3: Big John

I say WOW, because Alabama dominates Arkansas like they were a Division II team, Southside High is 3-0 and gets WQSB’s team of the week, and Gadsden City High upsets Oxford (I can’t wait for GCHS vs. Clay-Chalkville).

I could say WOW because Auburn finally won a game (although over La-Monroe in OT), Pitt stuns Virginia Tech, and Western Kentucky upsets Kentucky ( I called that one).

I could say WOW, because Crossville is the only team this year to hold Tobey Pee to under 200 yards in a game. I also could say WOW to Coach Noles and his Boaz Pirates for being 3-0.

But I am going to give my biggest WOW to an unknown fraternity, ” THE BIG UGLIES”, also known as a lineman in your program. So when the Fyffe Red Devils amassed 344 yards rushing Friday night, I say WOW to their whole Offensive line!

Big John Gladden         bigjohn@wqsb.com

Week 2: Wow!

The Sardis Lions set a school record by scoring  10. That’s right, 10 touchdowns in their 68-48 win over Locust Fork. Senior Tailback, Tobey Pee, accumulated 415 total yards, 288 rushing and 127 receiving and scored 6 touchdowns. Locust Fork Senior Quarterback Geoffrey Bramblett was 30 of 49 for 423 yards passing with three touchdowns and rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His combined total was 560 yards and the two combined for 11 touchdowns.

The 975 yards set a state record for combined yards for two individual players in a game and the 116th total points were one of the highest totals in the state history.

Congratulations to the Susan Moore Bulldogs, this weeks WQSB- Pro Source Cycle Team of the Week.

There are 110 games on the “Board” for this week and we’ll have all your final scores this Friday Night, plus we’ll name the “Team of the Week” for Week Three.

Week 2: Plainview Bears

It was a long night in Geraldine for the Plainview Bears as they fell 36-14. After Plainview fumbled the opening kickoff it took the dogs a minute an a half to score their first touchdown. Then three minutes later Michael Davis for Geraldine scored on a 80 touchdown run. The following series Plainview converted two  4th down conversions to put up their first points of the game. At half the score was 17-7 in favor of Geraldine.

After half Geraldine scored 13 more points behind a strong rushing attack. Plainview next score came with 4:39 left in the 4th when freshman John David Martin scored. Plainview fought hard but in the end geraldine an their five backs was more than Plainview could handle. Next week Plainview has their first home game in over a year as they play another region game against Pisgah.

Week 3 Thoughts

The game of football, even with all its elaborate schemes, is still a simple game. You run the ball, you pass the ball, and you tackle the man with the ball; all of which Auburn seems it cannot do in the first 2 weeks of the season. Fort Payne and Boaz seem to be on a road to meet for our local 5A crown, as both are strong early. What a night for Tobey Pee…415 total yards and 6 TD’s (that’s a season for some people). I thought the Aggies were poised to make a comeback against Pell City, but alas it did not happen and they go to 0-2 (and here comes Clay-Chalkville).

Big John           bigjohn@wqsb.com

Week 1: Big John

So we have broken the huddle and week 1 was an exciting week of football. Boaz looks real good and could be setting up to make a run for their regions title. Albertville let me down by dropping a 14 point lead to Arab, and now here come the 6A boys for the next few weeks (this could be a long season). I also think that Alabama is still a juggernaut, while Auburn will be ok (we will see if they can bounce back against Miss St.). As for week 2, Etowah and Fort Payne should be the big region battle in the local area, as this game has determined the region title for the past few years….see you there!

“Big” John       bigjohn@wqsb.com

Week 2

Week one is in the books!

Congratulations to the Sylvania Rams! This weeks Pro Source Cycle “Team of the Week.” Be sure and vote for the “Player of the Week” which will be announced Thursday Morning at 7:30.

Regional play starts this week, with big games at Fort Payne as the Wildcats host Etowah and #1 Oneonta plays Guntersville. There are three big gmaes in Dekalb County as Fyffe hosts Westbrook, Plainview plays at Geraldine and Sylvania hosts New Hope in a game that will feature two great offenses.

There are 111 games on the “Board” for this week and we’ll have all your final scores this Friday night, plus we’l name the “Team of the Week” for week two.
